Think Pink

It's no secret that pink is my favorite color. This feminine hue has been in my life since I was born (obviously, baby girl and all) and I plan to keep it that way. I blame the real obsession to Mrs. Kay Thompson. Some of you may know her as Maggie Prescott from Funny Face, one of my favorite fashion/Audrey/general movies of ALL time. For Heaven's sake the name of this post came from the opening number of this fun film; pink for the Quality woman. Others may know her as the writer of Eloise. Yes, Eloise at the Plaza. This quirky, troublesome little girl with the knack of the color apparently rubbed off on me. And it seems to have rubbed off of fashion designers from all of the fashion capitals. Celine, Valentino, and Dior are just a few of the designers who donned the color on the runway, but it's my favorite on the street. I love the way the color can be taken in a feminine way or in a masculine way as well by the shape or texture of the garment. Here are some of my favorite looks and inspirations.

Cowboys and Indians

Growing up, my brother and I were always playing Cowboys and Indians. Maybe it was because Davy Crockett was our favorite movie to reenact scenes from or the awesome costumes that we played with that I fell in love with the idea. Although the game may be seen as a clashing of cultures, I see it as a fashionable agreement. Think about it, you've got fringe, navajo prints, denim, suede, feathers, leather, animal skin and fur! That's quite a list, huh! Well I'm taking my new obsession into my own wardrobe, and taking inspiration from these other sources--most of which come from the stampedes in fashion capitals around the world.

Inspiration: A Bug's Life

As of lately I have oddly been drawn to bugs, especially scientific interpretations of the creatures, like the one above. I think it would be so neat to have something like this in my room, but for some designer, they thought butterflies and other bugs would do well on clothes and accessories. Temperley London experimented with butterflies in their Resort 2015 collection. The long maxi skirts paired with the white shirts and sweaters scream Carolina Herrera, but in Alice Temperley's voice. The designer stayed true to her roots with beautiful prints, embroidery, and evening gowns. Along with the boxy jackets with the popped collars (the only way I wear my collars), there were prints featuring butterflies in all different colors. I've noticed this entomology from Temperley's fellow British designer, Sophia Webster. Her latest line of accessories consist of high heels and clutches displaying leather butterflies with cutouts and bug puns (love a good pun). I also saw an awesome bag made from beetle wing coverings (also called elytra), which I can't find a picture of, so I included a pair of earrings made with the same wings below. I don't think there will be any squealing with these particular creepy crawleys.

Inspiration: Crowns and Ice Cream

If there are two things I love, it's ice cream and crowns. The crown is a given because my friends call me Queenie (Queen Elizabeth, obiously), but ice cream I love because it symbolizes summer and warmer weather. I can't wait to get out of this dreary weather rut, even though I love storms. I just want to be able to wear denim cut offs and wrap my hair in scarves all summer with my favorite sunglasses, that look exactly like Karen Walker sunnies. I have a lot on my plate this summer, but I'm looking forward to all of them. First I'm going to a journalism camp, which just shows how big of a journalism nerd I am... but I'm taking an online class which will hopefully help me with my blogging (Lord knows I need it). Then later I am going to a camp at NC State at the School of Textiles for Fashion Business and I couldn't be more excited. After that I'm off to a nice relaxing week at the lake with my family, where I will be devouring every fashion magazine in sight because I still haven't even read my April issues.... I'm also hoping to work more on my photography, which is why the Terry Richardson photo above is my inspiration. My friend Casey and I have recently been obsessed with the look of raw photography. Terry Richardson does all of his pictures with a plain white background that contrasts the darker tone of the subject, which I think is beautiful. We are hopefully going to invest in disposable cameras (if invest is the right word). They are so beautiful because you only have one chance to take a picture and there is no delete button, which I think gives everything a very natural, raw look. So cheers to summer and the freedom that comes along with it.

Inspiration: Blue Eye

When I was little, my grandparent's next door neighbors had a horse that we called Blue Eye. I feel like that's a very generic horse name, but it was totally representative of his electric blue eyes. Since I was blessed (or cursed, whatever you want to say) with hazel eyes that turn color about every hour, I have to find other ways to achieve this blue hue. This Miles Aldridge image is a thing of beauty to me. The model (looking to see who it is) looks like a modern day Verushka, especially with those wide eyes. How pretty is the blue under eye-liner? I love it! I wish that I had the confidence to wear bold make up like this. Well, it's not really that I don't have the confidence, because I don't give two craps about what the kids at my school thing, it's mainly that I don't want to start a new beauty look with no skill, because trust me, there is no beauty skill here. This summer I am going to try and learn some new techniques (I love watching beauty videos on youtube from Teen Vogue to Charlotte Tilbury).

Here is a good example of changing the harsh, very literal take from Moschino Cheap and Chic and changing it into an everyday look.

Sea What I Can Do

I usually can hold myself up until the end of the school year, but not this year. I can not wait for this school year to be over. It might have something to do with all of my best friends leaving next year for college and leaving me alone to suffer in high school. So as I catch myself day-dreaming about summer getaways in exotic places, I also fantasize about all of the amazing clothes I will be wearing (or the clothes I won't be wearing ie., bathing suits only). Here are some of the beach babes I will hopefully be emulating this summer.

I love how happy and cheerful all of these girls are. Brigette Bardot with her cheetah, that woman with the awesome hat and precious dog (an accessory anyone can have), a woman from the 20s with an inflatable zebra, and five friends on the beach playing leap frog. They all look so happy, which is why all of these women are my inspiration for summer fun and embracing every minute with my friends and family. And last but not least Kate the Great. On a rock in the middle of the ocean.. In a gown.. Nothing else.

Audrey's 85th

As you may already know, I happen to quite like Ms. Audrey Hepburn. I have loved her style, her kindness, and her talent for as long as I can remember and I don't think it should go without mentioning. She has helped me through so much. You may ask 'how could she help a teenage girl if she's dead?' Well because she has helped me love myself and is currently helping me be kinder towards people. She has taught me to embrace my insecurities and to flaunt my long neck or my thick eyebrows. Her movies or biographies, or merely just looking at pictures of her (trust me I have a ton) can easily fix my crappy day. I don't know what it is but I feel such a strong connection to her and it makes me feel like the luckiest girl in the world to be able to watch and learn from her ways. So at this moment, I am prouder than ever to be this beautiful woman's biggest fan. We'll end with the clichest of cliches: I love my fair lady.

I'm Feeling: Ruffled Bell Sleeves

The picture of the man above may be a little deceiving and you might be wondering why a bald man from the colonial era is part of my inspiration. Well, it's neither the man nor his lopsided hat I'm interested in, but his ruffled sleeves. I had this image in my mind and could not find where I knew it from. It took me about 30 minutes to find this picture, and it is still not exactly what I was thinking of. When I think of ruffled, bell-sleeves, I imagine a man who has thrown off his heavy, obtrusive coat and gone down to his "unspeakables" to duel his enemy for the love of his maiden. Wrong era probably, but I think that this simple little sleeve adds such an element of surprise and ornamentation to an already fancy-ish look. I also think of them being dainty lace. I just had an epiphany! Mid-type I realized that the look I was thinking of is from the 1600s, the Baroque Era. Especially in films, like Pirates of the Caribbean, can you see these little sleeves poke out of grand ball gowns. Even thought the baroque era is known already for their obviously baroque dresses, I opt to take my inspiration from something that is a little less glamorous and well known, like these rocking bell sleeves!
